Movie Review: Hard Candy

- Director: David Slade
- Genre: Drama/Thriller
- Year: 2005
Realistically speaking, the odds of this movie ever actually taking place are astronomically bad, which in a way puts a bad mark on it from the begining. Fortunately, it is the only serious mark it gets. Though the acting wavers here and there, the concept is still so engrossing, that one can not help but watch with rapt attention.
Putting a twist on the typical hunter/predator tale, a fourteen year old agrees to meet a photographer she meets in a chat room for what could seemingly be an innocent meeting. Though it soon becomes clear that one of them wishes for this to go further and as the two end up in the photographer’s house neither quite prepared for what the other holds. It becomes a game of wits, where soon the two characters are simply trying to outsurvive the other.
Shot in a minimal budget, this film still manages to hold visual interest with some interesting shots and soft focus transitions. All and all an engaging film if you can just get over the fact that it IS a movie and it would take a genius of a 14 year old for any of this to ever happen.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
